Solo Leveling‘s Premiere Sets up A Gorgeous Dark Fantasy
Even though Solo Leveling’s first two episodes mostly focus on establishing the main plot, there is still much to like about them. Interesting worldbuilding results from the gimmick of dungeons combined with political intrigue, and it only gets better when the whole thing is centered around fantasy action that’s never scared to be as dark and frightening as possible. Solo Leveling has many positive aspects, both narratively and technically. Shunsuke Nakashige and Hiroyuki Sawano’s stunning directing and composition make every scene captivating to watch.
Naturally, Sung Jin-woo, the main character in Solo Leveling, pulls everything together. Jin-woo’s character is a typical weak protagonist who wants to do everything in his power to strengthen himself for the people he loves. However, the way he is portrayed—largely due to the excellent direction of the anime—makes him likable from the outset, and the idea that he will be rewarded for the few unconventional abilities he has already shown makes for an interesting setup for upcoming episodes. In light of all of that, Solo Leveling’s debut offers a lot of positive aspects that should be used over the remainder of its existence.

Solo Leveling’s Odd Pacing Brings Down An Otherwise Great Show
If there’s one thing Solo Leveling can be criticized for, it’s the strange pace of decisions made in the first two episodes. Although Jin-woo’s story is the primary focus of the narrative, there are numerous instances in which the show abruptly switches to scenes with other characters, such as Jin-woo’s sister and friend or the S-rank Hunter Cha Hae-in, none of whom are relevant to Jin-woo’s story. This leads to the first two episodes of Solo Leveling having a tempo that is frequently jarring.
It should be noted, though, that what the episodes omit foreshadows later storylines from the novel and manhwa, therefore the anime most likely intended to expand on those plot points beyond what was provided in the original work. Still, it has a noticeable detrimental impact on the tempo, which detracts from what is, up until now, an excellent adaptation of a fantastic narrative. Solo Leveling can easily rank among the finest anime of the year if they can avoid these pace problems in future episodes. Hopefully, they won’t have any.
